Ear Candling, or Thermal-Auricular therapy as it is sometimes known, has been used for millenia.
It is known that ear candling was practiced by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Aztecs as well as other cultures including Hopi Indians by whose name the treatment is most often known.
The Hopi candle is not a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out of cotton flax. To stiffen the flax, they are impregnated with extract of honey and herb oils (in particular chamomile, sage and St Johns wort), the healing properties of which have been known for hundreds of years. The making of the candles is a complex process and all genuine Hopi candles are made in the traditional manner.
Being a hollow tube or cone the centre of the candle is a column of air . When the candle is lit the air rises creating a mild suction action at the base. This helps to loosen compacted earwax, in addition the other ingredients of the candle are vaporised making some of the air heavier and causing it to spiral down the ear canal. The pressure of the air gently massages the eardrum causing all the structures of the inner ear to receive a gentle massage effect. As the ear, nose, sinuses and throat are all interconnected, this has the effect of regulating and balancing pressure in the ears and in the whole of the upper respiratory tract.
Conditions that may benefit from Hopi Candles are:
Session lasts approximately 45 min and you will be asked to lie on your side on a couch. A special cloth is placed over the ear to protect the face, and a candle is placed in the ear and lit. Once the candle has burnt down to approx 4 in from the bottom the candle is removed and extinquished, you will then be asked to turn over and the process is repeated in the 2nd ear. You will hear a crackling noise as the candle burns, this has been described as sounding like gentle rain falling on a nylon tent
The Therapy is finished with a gentle face massage. Relaxing music is generally played in the background during the therapy. You will remain fully clothed throughout.
