Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy, taking into consideration the mind, body & spirit of the client.
The word Aromatherapy to describe the use of essential oils from plants as a form of treatment was first used in the 1920s by a French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé, who devoted his life to researching the healing properties of essential oils after an accident in his perfume laboratory where his arm was badly burned and he immersed it in the nearest liquid which happened to be lavender oil. Finding that it alleviated the pain and the burn healed much quicker than it would normally, he devoted his life to studying essential oils and their healing properties. The concept of Aromatherapy however, has been around for much much longer and can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians who were using aromatic properties of plants 3,000 years before Christ for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.
Today Aromatherapists use essential oils in a variety of ways to bring about health and harmony, the most common of which is massage where the essential oils are absorbed by every cell of the body. The oils can also be used in bathing, compresses and inhalation.
